I recently tried to renew my driver's license.  It was not an easy task and I did not even have to take a driver's test.  I have to blame myself for all the things that took place, but that is why it makes an interesting story.

Day One

I drove to the driver's license renewal place.  I went to the front counter and asked the clerk if this is where I go.  She directed me to the room next door.  I asked her how much it is to renew my license and she tells me the fee.  I told her that I would need to go to an ATM machine and pointed across the street at the store.  I went to the ATM machine and the machine spit out a receipt stating that it could not do the transaction.  I went back to work since I was on my lunch break.  A co-worker tells me that they have an ATM right there inside the driver's license renewal place.  I wonder why the clerk did not tell me about this.

Day Two

I arrived at the driver's license renewal place.  Just before going in I looked for all my forms of identification (insurance card, car registration, etc).  It was at that point that I remembered that I put them in a bag that I had left at work.  I went back to work.  My second attempt had failed.

Day Three

I got all my forms of identification and walked into the driver's license renewal place.  I grabbed a number and waited in the long line.  They called my number and I got to come inside the inner door.  I was asked for two forms of identification to prove my current address.  They said that my car registration would count as one.  I would have to come back with a check or some other acceptable proof of my current address.  My third attempt had failed.

Day Four

I get to the place again and grab a number.  My number is drawn and I get to come inside.  I showed them a check and all the other information they wanted.  The guy seen the note on the form that I had been there the day before.  He proceeds to tell me that I could of done the renewal online.  We continued with the renewal process and he had me go over to the eye test machine.  I asked him how would someone do the eye test if they renewed online.  He responds by letting me know that it is not required online.  I guess you can renew your license as long as you can see the print on your computer screen.  Then he has me stand next to the screen to have my picture taken.  At this time I was rather confused why I was doing this if I could do this online.  After asking him this question, he responds by telling me that they use your old photo if you renew online.  He could see the frustration on my face and went on to tell me that you also don't need two forms of identification when you renew online.  I think I made a big sigh and he apologized.  He further said, "I don't make the rules.  I know this kind of contradicts everything".

Do you think that I will remember to renew my driver's license online in five years?  Hopefully someone will remind me.
